Tasting Notes
Earth and spice starts followed by deeper darker elements. Blackberries, cassis, minerals and smoke. Incredible concentration, depth and a perfect amount of fine grained young tannins build a complex wine with very substantial potential. Potent, muscular and balanced we are calling this our best Columbia Valley Cabernet so far. It shall henceforth be known as the “Dark One”.
Winemaking Notes
The Columbia Valley Cabernet blend is my favorite and most challenging blend to make. This year it’s almost solely a blend of Wahluke Slope and Walla Walla, showcasing the best of both AVA’s. Wahluke delivers power and ripeness where as Walla Walla delivers earth, spice and mineral components while softening the major tannin structure of the Wahulke Slope. Gentle handling all the way through ensures fresh and clean fruit as with all our wines!
Vintage Notes
2008 was a compelling and complicated year! Compelling because of the balance the wines are showing already at this very early stage and complicated because of the some what cooler season. The cooler temperatures made for very intentional and thoughtful picking decisions and it required the nerve to wait for the fruit to ripen before the frost took over. In hindsight, we are very happy with our decisions! All of our fruit ripened later than normal but the longer hang time accumulated very complex flavors in the grapes. Nice and balanced, higher acidities and lower alcohols make promise for wines of elegance and grace! In our opinion, it’s another great vintage!
