Full of beefy aromas of wild berry and blackberry with exotic leather, earth and a hint of violets and spice box. A full bodied, intense wine with a deep dark purple color, racy acidity, excellent balance, structure and complexity with chewy tannins and a layered, persistent finish. Put this wine in the cellar for a few years to allow it to show its very best. – Tim Olson, Winemaker

Gamey and exotic to the extreme, the gorgeous 2008 Olson Ogden Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard, 100% Syrah aged for 17 months in 67% new French oak, delivers a captivating bouquet of huge game, smoked leather, white pepper, and spice that’s balanced by a rich core of raspberry and blackberry driven fruit. Beautifully complex and interesting on the nose, this medium to full-bodied beauty is balanced, has solid concentration, good acidity, and notable length on the finish. If you don’t like a little game or dried beef in your Syrah, this isn’t for you. However, I’m a fan and it will be interesting to see how this develops with age. Possibly better with a year or three in bottle, this should drink well for 10-12 years, if not longer. 92 points, The Rhone Report

Alder Springs is located just outside of Laytonville in Mendocino County, an hour north of Ukiah. The vineyard is 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean and sits on an east facing mountain slope between 1700’ and 2700’. The vineyard is sustainably farmed in meticulous fashion and yields are very low, ranging from 1.5 to 2 tons per acre. The resulting berries are small with a high skin to juice ratio which produces concentrated, intense wines.

Stu Bewley and his team are the most dedicated and passionate farmers we have ever worked with. They are constantly innovating new techniques to fine tune an already great vineyard. Stu continues to experiment with new clones and rootstocks as well as leading edge varieties including Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne.
